Rejecting the term #atheist

- #atheism -

It is at one level completely inane to call oneself an atheist. The term can only make sense if we use theist as the reference point. But unlike a theist, nothing actually attaches to atheism. Atheism doesn’t make me accept evolution, it doesn’t make me a liberal or a Marxist- all it means is that I lack belief in gods- any gods.

That in itself doesn’t mean anything. It’s hard conveying the sense in which gods are completely absent and incomprehensible to my life. I don’t look at the species I study and think how this proves or disproves God creation. I don’t think of God when I’m being shot at, or navigating topical/subtropical forests in the dead of night. I don’t just lack belief in gods, the concept is utterly absent from how I live my life.

I no longer think the world is divided into theists and atheists. The distinction is between those people who use evidence to understand the world around them, and those that use fables. I am a person who finds it reasonable to understand reality by using the evidence I acquire. The only thing that can cause me to change this view of reality is the production of new evidence.

I regard it as unreasonable and untenable to believe in anything that lacks corroborative evidence- and that includes  the claim that gods in fact exist.
